The aim of the WALD Innovation Facility is to contribute to climate protection and the conservation of biodiversity through innovative nature-based projects, using the carbon markets in the process. The WALD Innovation Facility is intended to enable the development and implementation of innovative and ambitious project approaches in an economically sustainable manner. It is intended to facilitate novel project approaches, procedures and methods relating to nature-based projects in the categories i) forests (especially agroforestry), ii) peatlands and iii) blue carbon, which do not find sufficient funding due to a lack of experience, among other things. The aim is to promote their economically sustainable feasibility and their contribution to the further development of the carbon market. The WALD Innovation Facility will promote the development of such innovative projects through the project sponsor IUCN through a competition process (Challenge Fund) that could not be carried out without this support. The funds will be made available through public international tenders and awarded in the form of grants. The financing will be supplemented by the partners' own contributions. The main criterion for funding will be that the projects make a significant contribution to innovation and demonstrate the feasibility of new approaches, procedures and methods. The geographical focus of the projects is in or near key areas for biodiversity within countries where financial cooperation funds can also be counted as ODA. The WALD Innovation Facility is initially funded by the BMZ with a grant of EUR 9.0 million.
