Walnut Creek Station Modernization/TOD Access Improvements

In coordination with the Walnut Creek Transit Village project, BART is planning for improvements to Walnut Creek Station that will support improved station access, safety and customer experience. Since opening in 1973, Walnut Creek Station has become one of the busiest stations in Contra Costa County, serving approximately 7,000 riders each day. Supported by CCTA Measure J and state STIP funds, BART's goals for the Station Modernization and TOD Access Improvements project include: Provide an Excellent Customer Experience: Create a sense of arrival, improve wayfinding, enhance safety, reduce clutter, integrate art and placemaking features. Make Transit Work: Maintain the station in a good state of repair, upgrade the station to support ridership growth, modify the station to reduce fare evasion. Connect to Communities: Improve access for all users to station for all uses, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, automobile users, and people with disabilities. The conceptual plan was completed May 1, 2019 and can be accessed here. BART staff are nearly done developing engineering designs for constructing the first phase of station improvements which will improve safety and circulation by adding stairs on the north end of the station, connecting the widened east and west platforms to the paid area of the concourse. The project will also relocate the existing paseo walkway from the east to the west side (against the BART parking garage) to better connect to the pick-up and drop-off area.
