Description | The Rhode Island Department of Transportation received the final permit from the Coast Guard for the Washington Bridge replacement project. The westbound side of the bridge, carrying I-195 over the Seekonk River, has been closed since December 2023. Construction on the replacement will begin with the installation of drilled shafts to support the piers. The work will mostly occur within the footprint of the old bridge and primarily over water, minimizing early impact on traffic. The project aims to have all lanes open by fall 2028. |
