Description | Sunderland City Council has approved plans to transform the Washington F-Pit Museum with major accessibility improvements including a new heritage visitor centre, café, toilet facilities, seating areas, a small play area, exhibition space, interpretation installations, a new access road, and car park. The project aims to revitalize the historic F-Pit Winding House and its metal headgear, both protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and listed building. Work is expected to begin in spring 2026, with reopening in summer 2027. A separate planning application approved on March 30 will install a new accessible entrance link to improve disability access. |
