The project envisages the introduction of an environmentally friendly, resource-saving and economically viable, integrated waste management system in the provinces of Arequipa, Tacna and Coronel Portillo. The project sponsor is the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), and the partners in the implementation on site are the provincial and district administrations. The investment component includes the construction of waste disposal sites, sorting plants, composting plants, transfer stations (two in Arequipa and one in Tacna) for each location, as well as the procurement of collection containers and vehicles to improve waste collection. A mechanical-biological waste treatment plant (MBT) is also planned in Arequipa. The project supports the Peruvian government in its efforts to ensure that 100% of the waste collected in Peru is disposed of and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. The accompanying measure (BM) also provides for personnel support measures for the provincial and district administrations and the implementation unit of MINAM. The BM should also contribute to increasing cost coverage through waste disposal fees. In addition, awareness-raising measures on waste separation and the acceptance of the new waste management system among the local population will be carried out. This will support the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment's efforts to introduce waste separation in households (Ley de Gestión Integral de Residuos Sólidos, May 2020) and to promote recycling. Proper disposal in landfills will contribute to achieving Peru's climate contributions by saving greenhouse gas emissions.
