The aim of the waste management programme is to sustainably improve waste management by the responsible municipalities and their regional waste disposal companies, taking into account the principles of good governance, and to create a cleaner urban and rural landscape in selected regions of Kosovo. The project thus contributes to environmental and resource protection and to improving the living conditions of the population, while at the same time helping to promote elements of participatory development, democratisation and good governance. In accordance with the appraisal mandate, the project is linked to the GIZ TC measure "Development of sustainable local services (waste management), the aim of which is to support municipalities in Kosovo in providing services in the field of waste management in accordance with legal requirements and the core processes of good governance. The joint concept of FZ and TC (Clean Environmental Race) provides that the participating municipalities or their regional waste disposal companies receive devices and equipment for orderly waste disposal, provided they meet the access criteria and excel in selected performance indicators. This will give municipalities an incentive to continue pursuing reforms already initiated to implement the national waste management strategy and, if they successfully participate, will be able to noticeably improve their services thanks to the equipment provided. The target group of the project is the entire population in the 17 partner municipalities of Drenas/Glogovac, Mitrovicë e Jugut/Ju na Kosovska Mitrovica, Peja/Peæ, Prishtinë/Pri tina, Ferizaj/Uro evac, Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje, Gjakovë/Dakovica, Graèanica/Graçanicë, Istog/Istok, Kaçanik/Kaèanik, Klinë/Klina, Lipjan/Lipljan, Obiliq/Obiliæ, Podujevë/Podujevo, Shtime/timlje, Skënderaj/Srbica and Vushtrri/Vuèitrn. A financial support grant of EUR 4 million is available for the measures to be financed. This budget sets the framework. With the funds promised in 2015 (EUR 4 million financial support/aid), up to 17 municipalities can be included in the program.
