Description
Description | Following the amendment review in 2009, the project comprises two investment phases. In a first phase, rehabilitation and expansion measures will be carried out on the existing Sheik Ejleen sewage treatment plant south of Gaza City, as well as rehabilitation measures in the sewage system. The financing volume for this phase amounts to EUR 19.7 million of the original financing volume of around EUR 70 million. The construction of the new sewage treatment plant using the remaining funds is planned in a second phase, as soon as the political and security situation allows. Since the new sewage treatment plant is modular, a subsection can then be built first and linked to the existing sewage treatment plant, which is now to be rehabilitated. Personnel support for the sponsor by partially financing the costs of a project implementation unit is planned as part of an accompanying measure that relates to the project, is subordinate to the investment measures and is limited in its implementation time. The aim of the project is to guarantee environmentally and health-friendly sewage treatment in the central Gaza Strip. This will contribute to protecting water resources and reducing health risks for the population of the city of Gaza (overall objective). The immediate target group of the project are the residents of Gaza City (approx. 630,000) and the communities to the south, who will benefit from an expanded or restored wastewater disposal system. The indirect target group is the entire population of the region/Gaza Strip, who will benefit from the positive health and environmental effects of the program. |
