Description
Description | The aim of the FC project is the hygienically and ecologically safe collection and treatment of wastewater from the cities of Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote in Peru. The wastewater disposal and treatment measures will contribute to improving the health of the population and protecting water resources, as well as the Chimbote Bay and an adjacent wetland. The project includes the construction of a sewage treatment plant including a main sewage collector and pumping stations for the cities of Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote, which currently have around 375,000 inhabitants. The sewage treatment plant consists of several cleaning stages (mechanical pre-cleaning, pre-clarification, micro-sieves and disinfection using UV) as well as sewage sludge treatment. The sewage gas produced is used to heat the digesters and to generate electrical energy. The treated wastewater is discharged into the open sea through a tunnel over a peninsula and a sea outlet pipe. The planned sewage treatment plant will replace the currently existing pond sewage treatment plant, which only functions inadequately and whose wastewater enters the Chimbote Bay largely untreated. An intensive consultation process with the public in Chimbote was carried out to develop the project concept. The project will investigate options for reusing the treated wastewater for irrigation agriculture. In view of the increasing scarcity of water supplies in the arid coastal regions of Peru, which is largely caused by climate change, the project makes an important contribution to adapting to climate change. |
