Description
Description | The project region includes Nablus East and the six surrounding communities of Azmut, Deir al Hatab, Salim, Beit Furik, Rujeib and Kafr Qalil. The main objective of the project is to improve wastewater management in the project region. The project also pursues two secondary objectives: firstly, to better protect the water resources in the aquifer and thus help strengthen adaptation capacities to climate change. And secondly, to reduce the health risk posed by untreated wastewater for the residents of the project area. The project sponsor is the city of Nablus. The project will be implemented by the city's Water Supply and Sewerage Department. The immediate target group of the project is the population of Nablus East and the residents of the six surrounding communities. This currently comprises around 115,000 inhabitants. By 2030, the number of inhabitants in the project area will increase to around 178,000. The project, the first phase of which is covered by this project, includes the financing of - planning and new construction of a central mechanical-biological sewage treatment plant, including an initial two-year operational support for the project sponsor; - planning and construction (new construction, expansion, rehabilitation) of sewer networks including house connections and, if necessary, septic tanks in the eastern half of the city of Nablus and in six smaller communities east of Nablus; - planning and new construction of systems for the pre-treatment of wastewater from industrial and commercial operations; - tools and equipment, including suction trucks, for the operation of the sewage treatment plant, the sewer networks and septic tanks and - a pilot project for the use of treated wastewater in agriculture in the Nablus region. The project is financed with funds provided by the BMZ (EUR 21.8 million) and by the EU Commission under a mandate (an additional EUR 17.14 million). As part of an increase, further FC funds (EUR 7 million) will be provided by the BMZ. |
