The Podgorica wastewater disposal project is intended to invest in the infrastructure for wastewater drainage and treatment in Podgorica. The relevant FC measure (project) proposes financing the main collector, which will connect a new wastewater treatment plant to Podgorica's wastewater network. The financing is to come from a budget loan of EUR 5 million. The FC module is co-financed by a promotional loan of EUR 30 million, grants from the Western Balkan Investment Framework of the European Union (EU) and a contribution from the city of Podgorica. The co-financing covers the costs of building a new wastewater treatment plant and associated investments as well as consulting costs. The project is the Montenegrin government's top priority in the environmental sector and is accordingly listed in the EU Single Project Pipeline for Montenegro. The development policy objectives of the program are environmental and resource protection, in particular the protection of local and cross-border water resources, the improvement of the living conditions of the population in the Podgorica project area (main objectives) and adaptation to climate change (secondary objective). The project also supports Montenegro in its approach to the environmental and technical standards of the European Union. The project objective is to channel municipal wastewater from households, businesses and institutions in the Podgorica project area to the new sewage treatment plant. The project essentially includes the construction of a sewage treatment plant and associated construction measures such as main and secondary collectors and house connections. The investments are intended to ensure that the Podgorica Water and Wastewater Company (Vodovod i kanalizacija - ViK) only discharges wastewater treated in accordance with EU standards into the Moraca River, the main tributary of Lake Skadar. The program therefore makes an important contribution to protecting the environment in Montenegro and neighboring Albania.
