Description
Description | Lake Victoria, the most important freshwater reserve in East Africa, is increasingly threatened by pollution due to the discharge of untreated sewage into the rivers in the water catchment area due to increasing population growth and advancing urbanization. Many cities in the water catchment area lack adequate drinking water supply and wastewater disposal. The project is intended to contribute to the protection of Lake Victoria by improving wastewater management and to improve access to sanitation and drinking water supplies for the population in selected cities. The planned investment measures of the project consist primarily of construction work to rehabilitate and expand existing water supply and/or wastewater disposal systems in the cities of Kericho, Kisii and Litein. It is expected that around 94,000 people will have access to piped water supplies and around 30,000 will have access to piped wastewater disposal. While the direct target group includes the urban and peri-urban population in the cities of Kisii, Kericho and Litein, the entire population of the Lake Victoria catchment area also benefits indirectly from the improved wastewater collection and treatment in the project area. The FC module is directly linked to the now completed project Development of the Water and Sanitation Sector - Lake Victoria South, in the context of which measures to improve the water supply and the expansion of the sewage treatment plant at the Kisii site have already been implemented in Kisii and Kericho, among other places. The module is part of the trilateral cooperation with Israel. The Israeli government has conducted training courses for institutions in the water sector in the region. |
