The main objective of the FC measure is the use of treated wastewater in agriculture to promote rural development through employment and income opportunities. This reduces water consumption in agriculture and the measure helps to strengthen adaptation capacities to climate change. At the same time, the lower volume of wastewater relieves the Palestinian Authority of payments to Israel for wastewater treatment. The project sponsor is the city of Nablus in the West Bank. The measure is to be implemented by the city's water and wastewater department in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the local water users' association. The project region includes several villages that border the Nablus West sewage treatment plant site and whose agricultural land is almost entirely located in the Israeli-administered Area C. The target group of the measure is the rural population of the project region of around 15,000 inhabitants, consisting of farmers, landowners, workers and their families, who will benefit directly from the measure. The total cost of the planned measures amounts to EUR 11.6 million and is to be financed with EUR 12 million in FZ grant funds.
