Wastewater System Upgrades - Digby

The project consists of upgrades to wastewater system in the Town of Digby. The scope of the work involves a new curtain in cell #3 at the regional wastewater facility as well as replacement of Lift Stations #1 and #2. The project aims to improve to the wastewater system. This is an upgrade to the wastewater system - the treatment capacity will not change. The Town of Digby and the Municipality of the District of Digby are co-owners of the Digby Regional Waste Water Treatment Facility in Smith’s Cove, which is operated by the Town of Digby through an inter-municipal agreement. The project includes: (a) Constructing new lift stations at station #1 and station #2. The upgrade will include new pumping chamber, pumps, all new electrical components, communication devices for our SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, back up power plugs, piping and all ground work. This upgrade is needed because the stations are unable to handle the additional load that has been added over the years along with when extensive rain fall happens the station are always in high water and we have had a few wastewater over flows into the Annapolis Basin because of Station #1. (b) Installation of a new curtain in cell #3 at the Digby Regional Wastewater Facility in Smiths Cove. There have been total suspended solid (TSS) issues over the past three years. In the summer of 2018 Nova Scotia Environment did a site inspection because the TSS is above the limit as per our approval to operate. The receiving waters our effluent is going to is the Annapolis Basin. This area is the lively neigbourhood of so many people in this area and we want to insure we have high quality effluent entering the basin so we do not affect the fishery in this area. We had a site inspection completed by an engineering firm and the recommendation was to have a curtain installed in Cell #3 so we can make a still zone before out effluent is treated by UV.
