Wastewater System Upgrades - Lamèque

The Town of Lamèque has a facultative lagoon which was initially constructed in 1975 and updated in 1993 with the reconstruction of the dykes and the addition of a surface aerator. The effluent is discharged along the side of a shallow estuary and high-power aerators are removed from the lagoon during winter as a result of damage occurring in past years. The lagoon serves a population of around 1,285 people. The upgrades to the water treatment system consist in replacing the current treatment system with new components which would allow the system to deliver clean effluent 12 months out of the year and also allow the future development of the municipality. The project consists of: - the construction of a new, deeper lagoon with a synthetic membrane and two basins; - the upgrading of the process by replacing the surface aerators with a system of aeration by fine bubbles; - the replacement of the outfall sewer with a new one which will discharge the effluent through a culvert beneath Highway 113, a location which offers a greater zone of exchange; and - the discharge of effluent during ebb tide to minimize its impact upon the estuary.
