Description
Description | Jordan is one of the most water-poor countries in the world. Water consumption in the country has exceeded the supply of renewable water resources for years, which is leading to a continuous drop in the groundwater level. At the same time, there has been a rapid population growth in recent years, to now 10 million people, also due to the large number of refugees who have reached the country as a result of the Syrian crisis. The UN refugee organization UNHCR currently counts around 670,000 registered Syrian refugees, 80% of whom live in host communities. The supply situation in the northern governorates of Jordan in particular continues to suffer from the influx of refugees. This measure aims to improve the drinking water supply and sanitation for the local population and refugees in northern Jordan and to prevent conflicts. By protecting groundwater from pollution through improved sanitation and reducing water losses in the drinking water supply, a contribution can also be made to adapting to climate change. The measures supported in the area of water supply include in particular the rehabilitation of drinking water networks and drinking water mains, as well as drinking water pumping stations. In the area of wastewater disposal, the expansion of sewer networks is financed in particular. Small-scale measures to improve the water supply and wastewater disposal situation of vulnerable households are also planned. Syrian refugees and the local population of Jordan in the four northern governorates with around two million inhabitants will benefit from the project. A special focus is on the host communities of Mafraq, Irbid, Ajloun and Jerash. The project is being implemented with the Jordanian Water Authority of Jordan as the project sponsor. |
