Description
Description | Due to the massive influx of refugees in combination with the inadequate infrastructure in northern Uganda, the supply situation regarding safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is deteriorating, which increases the risk of water-borne diseases. The increased pressure on resources and social services also increases the potential for conflict between refugees and host communities. The FC commitment is based on the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) and supports its third pillar (Resilience and Self-Reliance) with the aim of providing development-oriented support to refugees and host communities. The project helps to ensure adequate, hygienic and sustainable water and sanitation supplies in selected refugee-hosting communities in northern Uganda (module objective). Water and sanitation systems are being built or expanded in a total of 10 rural growth centers and small towns as well as additional refugee settlement areas. In addition, measures are being implemented to strengthen the regional facilities Water and Sanitation Facility-North (WSDF-North, responsible for the construction of the infrastructure) and Umbrella Organization-North (UO-North, responsible for operations). The project is being implemented with a financial contribution of EUR 15 million through the mechanisms of the joint program approach (Joint Water and Environment Sector Support Programme, JWESSP 2019 - 2024). The project sponsor is the Ministry for Water and Environment (MWE). The target group is refugees and the Ugandan population. |
