Description

Description

The project improves water and sanitation supplies for the urban poor, thereby contributing to improving the living conditions and, in particular, the health situation of the poor population in slums, urban peripheries and informal settlements in and around Kenyan cities. The programme executing agency, the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), is a national financing institution for the mobilisation and implementation of poverty-oriented investments in the water sector. Licensed water supply companies can apply to the WSTF for financing for their investments, such as the expansion of the urban water supply (e.g. water kiosks or yard connections) or the construction of public and private sanitation units (e.g. toilets and shower houses), as part of tender competitions. Water supply companies are also supported in financing themselves commercially through a results-based approach. Needs-based information and awareness-raising measures as well as coordinated measures to strengthen the executing agency complement the project. The project will be carried out in around four years. The total costs are expected to be EUR 13.2 million - of which an FC loan of EUR 1.5 million will be provided. EUR 11.0 million and a contribution from the Kenyan government of EUR 2.2 million.
