Water Farm 1 is an underwater desalinization system developed by Oceanwell in collaboration with the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and six other Californian water agencies. It involves installing about 60 submarine modules at a depth of about 400 meters in the Bay of Santa Monica, off Malibu, to produce drinking water directly from the ocean using natural hydrostatic pressure to power reverse osmosis, reducing energy consumption by 40%. Each module can produce up to 3.8 million liters of ultra-pure drinking water per day, aiming to produce up to 227 million liters per day by 2030 to help reduce pressure on overloaded water systems.
