As a result of the economic decline and the associated lack of funding for the expansion and maintenance of relevant infrastructure, the drinking water and sanitation supply for the Burundian population has deteriorated significantly. This is also evident in the increasing number of cholera epidemics. The effects of climate change are further exacerbating the situation. Against this background, the aim of the water, hygiene and sanitation program via NGOs is to contribute to supplying the rural and urban population in up to eight municipalities in the provinces of Muyinga and Gitega with hygienically safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation infrastructure. The recipient and sponsor is the non-governmental organization (NGO) International Rescue Committee Inc. (IRC), which is implementing the measures in cooperation with its partner Care. Packages of measures are being implemented for villages, schools and health centres in the areas of (i) drinking water supply (e.g. rehabilitation and new construction of water points and water supply systems), (ii) sanitation (e.g. rehabilitation and new construction of latrines) and (iii) operation and awareness-raising (e.g. strengthening and formation of user committees, hygiene awareness-raising). The FC grant for the measures amounts to EUR 5 million.
