Water Metro Expansion to 18 Cities

The central government plans to expand the water metro service to 18 more cities in India following the success in Kochi. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion in major cities by utilizing existing waterways and providing an environmentally friendly and sustainable transport system. The expansion will be implemented in phases, with the first phase including cities like Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj, and the second phase including Tezpur and Dibrugarh in Assam. The project involves the formulation of the National Water Metro Policy 2026 and considers various funding models including Centre-State partnerships, public-private partnerships, and fully state or centrally funded projects.
