Water Metro India Expansion

The central government of India is preparing to launch water metro services in 18 cities across the country, following the successful launch of the Kochi Water Metro. The project aims to transform inland waterways into sustainable public transport corridors, reduce traffic congestion, and promote tourism. The water metro system will include uniformly designed ferries, terminals, pontoons, charging and fueling facilities, and improved passenger amenities. The project is planned in phases, with the first phase including cities like Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj, and the second phase including Tezpur and Dibrugarh in Assam. Feasibility studies have been conducted, and some reports have been approved. The government is also working on a Draft National Water Metro Policy 2026 to establish a national framework for urban water transport.
