The world's largest exporter of phosphates and phosphate products, the Moroccan major company OCP Office Chérifien des Phosphates, with a market share of 30%, plans to more than double its phosphate mining and processing capacity as part of its 2010 - 2020 investment program. Since phosphate extraction and processing involve very water-intensive processes, OCP must expand its water supply and make its water usage processes more efficient. With this project, OCP is pursuing the goal of increasing its water supply and usage capacities in line with its needs and adapting them to increase efficiency as part of its water investment program. The individual measures include, among other things, the construction of seawater desalination plants for alternative water extraction, the construction of sewage treatment plants for the multiple use of process water and the construction of long-distance water pipelines for the supply of water from a reservoir as a replacement for the previous extraction of groundwater. The subject of this KfW promotional loan is co-financing of OCP’s water investment programme.
