Description
Description | The high need for investment in water and sanitation infrastructure in Zambia is the problem that is addressed in this project. As a result of the limited capacity of available water resources, population growth, climatic changes and aging water supply infrastructure, access to an adequate water supply for the population in the target area is steadily deteriorating and is sometimes severely restricted seasonally. This also results in health risks. In cooperation with the Zambian government and the Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWSC), the project aims at the efficient use of available water resources, which contributes to improved access to hygienically safe drinking water and thus strengthens the climate resilience of the target group. The provision of sustainable sanitation solutions contributes to the protection of existing water resources and reduces the health risks of the population of selected urban and peripheral areas of Choma. The target group for measures for the more efficient use of existing water resources includes the entire population of the medium-sized towns of Choma and Livingstone. The target group for sanitation measures includes the predominantly poor, disadvantaged population as well as women and girls in selected urban and peripheral areas of Choma. Key outputs include: 1. Systems for drinking water production in Choma and Livingstone as well as efficient drinking water treatment and distribution in Choma have been upgraded, installed, handed over and put into operation. 2. Sanitation for the poorer population in selected urban and peripheral areas and a related system for managing faecal sludge collection and treatment have been installed, handed over and put into operation in Choma. |
