The project aims to provide the Greater Kabul area with an increased supply of clean drinking water, the beginning of a sewerage system, and improved sanitation services in selected areas of Kabul, to complement the sewerage system. It would include the equipping of 10 wells being drilled under IDA I; the provision of a 15,000 m3 reservoir together with a booster pumping station; the installation of about 84 km of water mains; the installation of standpipes and hydrants; and about 14,400 meters. The sewerage component would provide three areas of Kabul with a collector system and disposal arrangements by installation of about 35 km of sewers, a 15,000 m3/day pumping station, a wastewater treatment plant, and house connections. Sanitation improvements would include storage, collection and disposal of human waste from house laterines.
