Description

Description

The water and sewage infrastructure of Moldova's cities and municipalities dates mainly from the Soviet era and is no longer adequate in terms of quantity or quality. In the districts of Straseni and Calarasi, only around 25,000 people out of around 170,000 are connected to a central water supply system. The majority of the existing groundwater also has a water quality that is inadequate for drinking water (high concentrations of boron, fluorine, sulfate, etc.), which poses health risks to the population. There is an immediate need for action here. The project's first phase focuses on the construction of a long-distance water pipeline from Chisinau to Straseni and Calarasi and investments in the urban water networks of the two district capitals. The project will provide the water supply companies in Straseni and Calarasi with safe drinking water, and 25,000 people will have improved access to drinking water in the first phase. In the subsequent phases, additional rural settlements and 50,000 people will finally be given access to drinking water through the expansion of municipal water networks and connection to the long-distance water pipeline.
