The water sector has been the focus of German development cooperation with Montenegro since 1999. As part of the overall Adriatic Coast Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal Program, the drinking water supply and wastewater disposal of five Montenegrin coastal communities in particular (Bar, Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat and Ulcinj) are being improved. The expansion, renewal and new construction of the technical infrastructure are planned in several phases. The overall program is divided into various individual projects and includes both material investments and personnel support measures. The aim of the overall program is to guarantee a year-round drinking water supply for the population, improve wastewater disposal and cover the peak tourist demand in the summer months. This is intended to contribute to the country's economic development by promoting tourism, as well as to environmental and resource protection and to a sustainable structure in the water supply in the coastal region of Montenegro in order to support Montenegro's EU accession process. The project is a stock check part (component 2) of the Adriatic Coast V programme. Component 2 will finance further investments in water supply and wastewater disposal in the coastal municipalities of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi.
