Description
Description | The proposed project to expand and modernize the Nairobi water supply is an integral part of a comprehensive commitment by various donors, in particular the World Bank, the European Union and the French development bank AfD. The overarching goal is to improve the water supply in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Around 3 million people live in the affected region. A further 3 million people commute daily to the greater area, which alone generates around 50% of the national gross domestic product. However, only two thirds of the people already have a connection to the public drinking water supply. The impact on the poor areas that are not yet connected to the network is particularly serious. Most of them are dependent on informal and more expensive water sellers and tankers, and are therefore subject to considerable financial burdens. But even the population groups with a water connection suffer from frequent supply failures, as only 35% of the estimated demand can be met. Against this background, a master plan was developed for the greater Nairobi area. This sets out measures to increase water production and define the corresponding water distribution. The international donors plan to support the Kenyan government in implementing the master plan. The KfW funds (EUR 25 million + EUR 5 million EU grant) will be used to rehabilitate and expand the distribution networks. This should improve the living conditions of the urban population and economic development. A training and further education measure (EUR 2.3 million) will be used to train the project sponsor and operators, thus ensuring improved and sustainable use of the infrastructure. |
