Description
Description | In July 2001 the Azeri state owned Imishli Water Company granted a 10 year lease contract for the city’s potable water and sewage systems to Waterworks Imishli JV. The lease contract covered the cities of Imshli, Gyanja, Sheki, and the Nakhchivan republic. Waterworks Imishli was granted operational management rights and was responsible for overseeing rehabilitation work and gradual re-construction of water supply and sewage. The Waterworks Imisli JV Ltd. agreed to pay rent for the use of the plants and facilities. The water supply system was intended to serve some 50,000 residents. Waterworks Imishli JV was owned by BerlinWasser International GmbH (BWI) (74.8%)and Imishli Water Company (Wasserbetrieb Imishli AöR)(25.1%). German bank KfW made a loan of DEM 30 (US$ 14) million towards the project. Operation of the facilities started in December 2002. The rehabilitation and construction measures were completed in May 2003. Initial progress had been made in achieving a 57% tariff collection rate, and increasing the number of hours during which water was supplied to the population from two hours per day to fifteen hours per day. According to Berlinwasser, the shares in Wassergesellschaft (waterworks) Imishli JV mbH, Azerbaijan were sold to the Azerbaijani coshareholder on 22 October 2009, as an efficient operation was no longer ensured due to a significant fall in customer numbers. Project status was changed to concluded since the private sponsor sold its shares to the Azerbaijani coshareholder.
