Description
Description | The program includes the rehabilitation, expansion and new construction of waterworks and sewage treatment plants as well as the associated distribution and disposal networks. The main aim is to improve wastewater disposal but also water supply in the governorates of Qena, Sohag, Assiut and Minya in Upper and Central Egypt (program objective). Furthermore, personnel support measures are planned to improve the performance of operators, train operating personnel and strengthen program management. The FC measure contributes to reducing health risks for the population and environmental pollution (overall objective). In addition, the reform measures in the water/wastewater sector initiated by the Egyptian government with the support of the EU in the direction of decentralization and flexibility are to be further supported. The target group is the population of the governorates mentioned, with around 19 million inhabitants. The program sponsor is the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater. The total cost of the program is estimated at approximately EUR 303.0 million, of which EUR 275.0 million is for investment measures and EUR 28.0 million is for personnel support. Financing is provided through joint financing between German FC, AFD, EIB, EU and the Swiss SECO totaling EUR 209.0 million and an Egyptian contribution equivalent to EUR 94 million. The FC contribution includes a joint loan of EUR 54.15 million, a grant of EUR 2.0 million (accompanying measure) and EUR 2.85 million from debt conversion funds. |
