Waterfront Trail Redevelopment for Whitby, Ontario

This project will make improvements to a section of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in Whitby. It entails redeveloping and widening 612 metres of asphalt recreation trail to a 3 or 4 metre width, replacement of over 230 metres of boardwalks and foot bridges and rest areas, intuitive wayfinding and interpretive signage. It will benefit local residents, neighbouring municipalities and tourists by creating a continuous accessible and safe active transportation route, across Whitby’s waterfront. The project improvements include the replacement of a 150 metre long boardwalk, 80 metre span pedestrian bridge, and the reconstruction of 612 metres of existing asphalt trail. The key outcome of this project is to create a seamless active transportation route along the waterfront to encourage individuals to choose active travel and engage in nature. This is a link in the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, which connects waterfront municipalities in active transit.
