Wayanad Tunnel Project

The Wayanad Tunnel Project is a flagship infrastructure project under construction in Kerala. Managed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, it will be the longest road tunnel in Kerala and the third-longest in India upon completion. The project includes an 8.1-km twin-tube, four-lane underground tunnel bypassing the congested Thamarassery Ghat Road, reducing travel distance and time significantly. The project received final clearance from the Supreme Court in April 2026, with rock excavation starting earlier that year. The estimated cost is ₹2,134.50 crore, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, with Dilip Buildcon Limited as the primary contractor. The target completion is early 2030. The project has faced environmental concerns and a major landslide incident in July 2026, which trapped workers and halted construction temporarily.
