Wayne Disposal Landfill Radioactive Waste Shipment Ban

A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has permanently barred the Wayne Disposal landfill in Van Buren Township, Michigan, from accepting shipments of radioactive waste from Manhattan Project-era sites managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The injunction follows a legal battle and concerns over the long-lasting harms of the waste and insufficient monitoring and engineering controls at the landfill. The landfill is owned by Republic Services and had accepted over 600,000 tons of radioactive waste prior to the injunction.
