Description | The Wayne N. Aspinall Unit, consisting of three dams on the Gunnison River (Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal), is Colorado's only part of the Colorado River Storage Project. It is a federal hydropower system that sells power across the West. The unit is experiencing a nearly 30% decline in electricity generation compared to historical averages due to shrinking river flows caused by climate change. Blue Mesa Reservoir is expected to end the year at just 17% of its live storage capacity, reducing generating capacity by approximately 18%. The system supplies about 3% of Colorado's energy and is under stress as demand increases, especially from data centers. |
