The project aims to strengthen the democratic participation of young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), aged 13–17, who remain among the most underrepresented groups in decision-making across Europe. Despite having a legal right to be heard, they continue to face significant barriers related to accessibility, communication, and the lack of inclusive structures and practices. Young people with IDD have clearly articulated their desire to participate, to be recognised for who they are, and to influence decisions that affect their lives. Many report that adults frequently speak on their behalf, and that opportunities to make meaningful choices are limited or absent. They emphasise the importance of time to prepare, accessible formats, and environments that allow them to express themselves in diverse ways. The project reinforces the capacity of children to participate meaningfully, while also addressing the systemic and structural barriers that hinder their inclusion. A central objective is to equip professionals, public authorities and decision-makers with concrete tools, training, and methods to support the participation of children with IDD across all levels of governance and service provision. Using a child rights-based and communication-sensitive approach, the project involves young people as active contributors in every stage of development, implementation and evaluation. Young people with IDD take the lead in co-creating accessible materials, inclusive participation models, and awareness-raising activities, drawing from their lived experiences and perspectives. Adults support this process by facilitating, listening, and adapting structures to reflect children’s needs and insights. In doing so, the project promotes equality, non-discrimination and inclusive governance, ensuring that young people with IDD are not only heard, but are actively engaged in shaping policies and decisions that concern them.
