West African Power Pool Regional Integration and Infrastructure Expansion

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is a regional initiative by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to integrate national electricity systems into a unified regional market. The project involves expanding infrastructure, including 75 priority projects with 28 transmission projects covering approximately 22,932 km and 47 generation projects totaling about 15.49 GW. It aims to improve cross-border power flows across 14 West African countries, enhance power reliability, facilitate cross-border electricity trade, and lower energy costs. The project also includes market design reforms such as the introduction of a day-ahead market and standardized transmission cost recovery methods to inspire investor confidence and create a commercially viable regional electricity market.
