Description

Description

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is a regional initiative by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to integrate national electricity systems into a unified regional market. The project involves expanding infrastructure, including 75 priority projects with 28 transmission projects covering approximately 22,932 km and 47 generation projects totaling about 15.49 GW. It aims to improve cross-border power flows across 14 West African countries, enhance power reliability, facilitate cross-border electricity trade, and lower energy costs. Key developments include a historic four-hour synchronization test in November 2025, targeting permanent synchronization by mid-2026, and the introduction of a day-ahead market to improve transparency and efficiency in power trading.
