The West Gate Tunnel Project is a large-scale toll road infrastructure project in Melbourne, Australia, featuring almost nine kilometres of elevated carriageways and a complex junction of overpasses on the city's western edge. The project includes twin four-kilometre tunnels beneath Yarraville with wooden arches inspired by Indigenous fishing nets, three new bridges over the Maribyrnong River with fibreglass panels resembling fish scales, over 100 orange poles as landmarks, noise walls alongside the freeway, and a cycling and pedestrian bridge with a connected veloway. The project aims to provide faster trips from the western suburbs to the city and reduce truck traffic on local roads. It has experienced delays and a $3.4 billion budget blowout but is nearing completion with an expected opening by the end of 2025.
