Description

The government of Malaysia awarded a 33-year BOT contract to Sistem Penyuraian Trafik KL Barat Sdn Bhd (Sprint). The project is divided into three phases. Phase A will link KL North East Expressway to the Federal Highway; Phase B will link Damansara and Puchong Highways; Phase C will link Damansara to Semantan. Phases A and B are under construction, and the works were expected to be completed by 2002, when toll rates were to be levied (total cost for this phase: US$ 221.4 million - M$ 920 million). Construction of phase C will only commence when financing has been arranged. The contract comprises a 3-year construction period and 30-year operation period. Sprint will build a dual three-lane 26km toll road, including a 700m tunnel and 17km of viaducts and bridges, in the western suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. Sprint is a consortium of three Malaysian companies: Mujur Minat Sdn Bhd (50%), Gamuda Bhd (30%), and Kumpulan Pinang Holdings Sdn Bhd (20%). The total project costs are estimated at M$1.3 billion (US$ 335 million) - M$1.17 from project financing arranged by Arab Malaysian Merchant Bank, and the remainder from shareholders equity.
