Opportunity West Park provides specialized rehabilitation, complex continuing care, long-term care and community health services for individuals managing difficult health conditions. In order to create a more accessible, senior-friendly and eco-conscious environment that is flexible and technologically advanced it will be necessary to build a new hospital. Results The new six-storey, 720,000 square-foot hospital will include: 314 inpatient beds—a 20 percent increase; 80 per cent single patient rooms; Three-piece washrooms for each patient for improved infection control; An expanded outpatient area to serve double the current patient volume; Geriatric clinics at the day hospital and satellite haemodialysis—two services that were not previously offered at the hospital; and Increased green space including outdoor therapy space and therapeutic gardens. The project also includes the demolition of all current patient care and maintenance buildings with the exception of the Long-Term Care Centre. The project is being designed and constructed with the intention of obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.
