Description | The West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system is a unique, on-call, direct-to-destination transit system built in the 1970s. It consists of small automated vehicles running on an eight-plus-mile guideway connecting five stations across the university campuses. The system moves approximately 12,000 people daily during school sessions and has provided an estimated 100 million trips over its 50 years of operation. The PRT has undergone technological upgrades, including a transition to an autonomous wireless train control system, and ongoing maintenance and infrastructure upgrades funded by federal transportation dollars. |
