Western States New Transmission Lines Expansion

Utilities and energy providers in the Western states plan to add more than 12,600 miles of new electric transmission lines over the next decade to meet rising demand, integrate renewable energy, and address aging infrastructure. The plan is based on an interregional transmission study by the Western Transmission Expansion Coalition (WestTEC), involving over 70 organizations including the Bonneville Power Administration and major utilities. The study identifies 105 projects, with two-thirds in planning stages and 20% under or nearing construction, aiming to improve grid reliability and support renewable energy integration.
