Westsyde Road Multi-Use Pathway

The proposed project is a 1.4 km multi-use pathway that will provide residents and visitors an accessible, separated, multi-use facility to walk, cycle, and roll safely between community destinations on I.R. #4. The multi-use pathway will be the first of its kind on I.R. #4. In addition to enhancing transportation options for residents, the pathway could also benefit economic development and tourism by diversifying recreation options and creating connections to recreation and community amenities. The proposed project is the first phase of a larger 2 phased project. Phase 1 includes the construction of a 3-metre-wide multi-use gravel pathway on already developed land. Phase 1 of the project will create connections between the Band Office and key destinations in the community such as the Community Hall, rodeo grounds, moto cross track, camping area, scenic areas, and the future site of the proposed multi-purpose facility which includes a health facility and offices. I.R. #4 is bisected by Westsyde Road, a B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) roadway, that has no designated pedestrian or bicycle facilities or lighting. Due to the lack of walking and biking infrastructure, community members are required to travel along the shoulder of the roadway to access community amenities and services. The posted speed limit on Westsyde Road is 80 km/h and the speed of traffic along roadway and lack of active transportation infrastructure has created pedestrian and cyclist safety concerns. The multi-use pathway is proposed on Band land and runs parallel to Westsyde Road. This pathway will help address safety concerns related to walking and cycling along Westsyde Road and encourage more active transportation use. Additionally, this project will create synergy with the conversations that the Band has had with the MoTI about improving pedestrian crossings and reducing vehicle speeds along Westsyde Road.
