Description
Description | The WhiskHy project is a collaborative effort involving Supercritical Solutions Ltd, Suntory Global Spirits, and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) to develop renewable hydrogen technology for whisky production. It features Supercritical's innovative electrolyser technology that offers lower Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), reduces the need for multi-stage hydrogen compression, and provides a steady, reliable hydrogen supply by removing membranes, a common failure point in electrolysers. The project achieved the first-ever direct-fired hydrogen-distilled spirit for whisky production and scaled up the technology from lab to multi-cell system, with trials at Suntory's Yamazaki Pilot Distillery in Japan. The Teesside 1 demonstrator in the UK reached Technology Readiness Level 5 in 2024, validating lab performance in an industrial environment. The project was supported by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) with a £2.94 million award as part of the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP). |
