Description

Description

The Whitehorse Compost Facility project would address two challenges of the existing facility: it will provide additional processing capacity to allow the organics collections programs to expand and accommodate population growth; and the environmental permit requires composting to be on an impermeable surface to prevent leachate from polluting the receiving environment. The upgrades include: 9000m2 of new gravel-surfaced working area; 4000m2 new concrete-surfaced curing area; 3200m2 aerated concrete processing pad; storm water and leachate management system; and associated civil, structural, mechanical and electrical upgrades. Following construction, the project will result in an increase in organics processing capacity from 2200 tonnes/yr to 3600 tonnes/yr (or more), thereby decreasing GHG emissions by an additional 350 tonnes (CO2e)/yr. Upgraded storm water and leachate management systems will allow regulatory compliance and decrease pump energy demands for irrigation.
