Description
Description | The City of Whitehorse’s Transit Services fleet currently consists of 15 low floor fully accessible 40-foot diesel buses serving public transit routes across the City of Whitehorse. The City has embarked on a Modernized Transit Route Plan (MTRP) to meet the needs of a growing city with expanding public transit services. This project involves the purchase of two battery electric powered vehicles to be used to shuttle transit drivers to and from buses on active routes at the start and end of the drivers scheduled driving shift. This is a main component of transit modernization using the practice of schedule blocking where a single bus can complete a long series of trips or routes without leaving the route and allows it to be completed by multiple drivers over the course of a longer period. The benefits gained by this MTRP is an improvement to passenger customer service through less bus transfers and/or vehicle switching during any given trip as well as a reduction in layover time and as well as a reduction in non-revenue time for buses. The end result of transit modernization and this project to purchase two driver shuttles is an increase in overall capacity and access to public transit in Whitehorse as well as improved quality and safety of existing and future public transit. |
