Whitelee Green Hydrogen Project

ScottishPower has applied for hazardous substances consent to operate a green hydrogen facility at Whitelee, the site of the largest wind farm in the UK. The project involves producing hydrogen through electrolysis of water using power from adjacent wind and solar farms, storing it in mobile tube trailers, and exporting it via road. The facility will operate under 'lower tier' COMAH standards and includes safety measures such as blast and fire impact modelling, venting systems, CCTV, fencing, and potential blast walls. Environmental considerations include peat depth, drainage, flood risk, and watercourse effects, with ongoing monitoring and regulatory permits being pursued. The project aims to be one of the UK's first large-scale green hydrogen production facilities powered directly by renewable energy.
