Wildfire Hazard Mitigation Project in Southern Yukon

This project aims to address the hazardous forest fuel loads that exists around three communities in Southern Yukon including Village of Haines Junction, City of Whitehorse and Village of Teslin. Due to forest regrowth and outdated fuel treatment prescriptions, these original areas need to be re-treated and brought up to current FireSmart standards. Retreatment of areas will include: 1. Increasing the spacing between the stems of conifer trees by targeting the removal of spruce/pine trees using handfalling and/or semi-mechanized methods; 2. Removal of ladder fuels including pruning branches of retained trees; 3. Removal of surface fuels, ladder fuels and debris via pile and burning, chipping or other uses.
