Description
Description | Construction of a new Wyangala water treatment plant to deliver cleaner, safer drinking water for residents of Wyangala village and the popular Wyangala Dam holiday park. Once commissioned, it will deliver up to 800 megalitres of clean drinking water every day. This is priority infrastructure as the current infrastructure is no longer fit for purpose. Since 2017 the current infrastructure has been unable to supply residents with water that meets the Australian Drinking Water Standards. Work started in early 2022 and was completed in late 2023. It is anticipated that the plant will be commissioned in early 2024. The Australian Government is committed to responsible investment in water infrastructure. This is based on scientific evidence and business cases that stack up economically and environmentally. Following the completion of the detailed business case, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments, the decision was made to not proceed with the construction of the Wyangala Dam wall raising project. The detailed business case and an Infrastructure New South Wales review showed that the costs would be considerably higher than originally estimated, and not provide enough benefits. Raising the dam wall would also cause significant negative impacts on the important wetland environment that is downstream. The Australian Government will continue to work with the New South Wales Government to support the water needs of the region. |
