Description | The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation Canal is a 12-mile channel in central Washington that supplies irrigation water to 35,000 acres of valuable farmland in the western Yakima Valley. The canal, completed 115 years ago, was severely damaged by the 2024 Retreat Fire, which caused landslides, debris, and structural damage leading to over 2,000 leaks. The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District has applied for a $240 million project to replace the canal, which will be done slowly and piecemeal over 8 to 16 years, with interim repairs ongoing to maintain water supply and fire suppression capabilities. |
