The project involves addressing the shipping fleet shortage for transporting LNG from the Yamal LNG terminal in Russia to Asia. Due to the EU ban on Russian LNG starting in 2027, the shipping routes to Asia are longer and require more tankers, including specialized ice-class carriers. Novatek has set up a company to build its own vessels and floating facilities to close the gap caused by Western sanctions limiting access to ice-class carriers. The project aims to maintain LNG export volumes to Asia despite logistical challenges and fleet limitations.
